If you have a hundred tunes in your head,
and you give half of them away, you still have a hundred tunes.
Giving them away makes holding onto them easier.

IMaybe you've marveled at how music
Maybe you've marveled at how musicians sit around and jam, listening to each other and working things out, and you'd like to have the freedom to play tunes you've learned by heart, to master them so that you can interpret them your own way, and to play with others collaboratively. Learning by ear, phrase by phrase, helps you play from the heart; this class takes the first baby steps in that direction.
Learning by ear proceeds in a different way than learning from sheet music, uses different parts of the brain, and produces different results. If you have no clue how to read music, or if you are a capable reader eager for a gentle introduction to learning traditional tunes in the traditional way, this class is for you. The focus will be on learning Irish tunes by ear, phrase by phrase, in the call and response model of traditional folk styles. Have never learned a tune by ear? Don't panic. Jen and Robert will take things slow and make sure everyone is comfortable with the speed of the class.
This class allows beginning musicians to experience the thrill of playing tunes with other musicians. Prior knowledge of your instrument is required, since Jen and Robert will teach the tune, but not technique as it applies to the individual instruments. Every week the class will play the tunes they learned the previous week, and learn a new tune.
Students should be able to play a D and G scale on their instrument. Also, bringing a recording device to class is strongly recommended. Class is limited to 5 students maximum.
